[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] The Changwon District Prosecutor's Office's Criminal Division 1 has announced on the 8th that they have indicted and arrested a 30-year-old bank employee, Mr. A, at a Woori Bank branch in Gyeongnam on charges of embezzling over 10 billion won through falsifying loan documents and creating fraudulent loans (under the Specific Economic Crimes Aggravation Act).
According to the prosecutor's office, Mr. A allegedly applied for fraudulent loans 35 times from July last year to May this year in the names of 17 individuals, including personal and corporate clients, diverting loan funds totaling 1.777 billion won to accounts belonging to acquaintances.
Between July and September last year, Mr. A reportedly contacted two individual loan clients, deceiving them into believing they needed to temporarily withdraw already deposited loan funds for remaining loan procedures, resulting in him receiving 220 million won into acquaintances' accounts.
Mr. A is accused of using stolen identities of the 17 loan clients to forge loan application documents like 'credit transaction agreements' and submitting them to the bank's head office personnel, misleading them into believing these were legitimate loan applications.
It was revealed that Mr. A mostly invested the embezzled funds into virtual currencies. Prosecutors and police cooperated closely to freeze about 4.5 billion won worth of virtual assets deposits, bank deposits, and lease deposits.
The prosecution plans to conduct swift and strict investigations into major economic crimes such as bank fund misappropriation in the future.
