[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The dialogue between Samsung Electronics' labor union and management, which was halted due to an indefinite general strike by the company's largest labor union, the National Samsung Electronics Union, is expected to resume soon.
According to industry sources on the 18th, Samsung Electronics sent an official document to the National Samsung Electronics Union in the afternoon, expressing hope for a swift resolution to the strike and proposing an unconditional resumption of talks.
Previously, on the 16th, the National Samsung Electronics Union had sent a document to management demanding the resumption of wage negotiations. The union stated, "Even now, we urge you to come to the negotiations with a sincere wage proposal," and warned that if management did not engage in wage negotiations by the 19th, greater production disruptions would be inevitable.
Despite the union's demands, management has requested the resumption of talks without presenting a negotiation proposal, leading the union leadership to hold an immediate meeting to discuss their response.
The National Samsung Electronics Union is demanding the following:
One day of leave for the founding day of the labor union.
A base wage increase of 3.5% for all union members (5.6% including performance-based pay increase).
Improvements to the performance-based pay system.
Compensation for economic losses incurred by union members due to the strike.
Management has shown reluctance to meet these demands, except for the long-term discussion of performance-based pay system improvements. They argue that, since the union is not the majority union, it is difficult to create differences in wage increases and leave between union members and other employees. Management has already agreed with the labor-management council on an average wage increase of 5.1%.
The National Samsung Electronics Union has been on strike since the 8th. While the initial rally attracted thousands of participants, recent promotional gatherings for the strike have seen participation drop to around 100 people.
Management maintains that there have been no production disruptions due to the strike so far.
