[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the 24th, according to industry sources, Hyundai Motor Company's union announced the results of a strike approval vote among its 43,160 union members. Out of 41,461 participants (with 1,699 abstentions), 38,829 members voted in favor, achieving a 89.97% attendance rate and a 93.65% approval rate. Those opposed to the strike numbered 2,605 (6.03% attendance rate, 6.35% voting rate).

Additionally, the union received a decision from the Central Labor Relations Commission (CLRC) to suspend mediation efforts, granting them the legal right to proceed with a strike. The CLRC issues such suspension decisions when there is significant disagreement between labor and management, impeding proper negotiation progress.

Immediately, the union plans to convene on the 27th for the launch and meeting of the Central Dispute Resolution Committee to discuss strike plans. However, historically, even after gaining the right to strike, unions often continue negotiations with management rather than immediately resorting to strikes. Thus, the exact timing of any potential strike remains uncertain. If the union proceeds with a strike related to the interim wage agreement, it would mark the first such action in six years since 2018.

Previously, the union had demanded a base salary increase to 159,000 KRW (excluding seniority pay increments), a 30% profit-sharing bonus based on the previous year's net profit, a 900% increase in bonuses, the introduction of a four-hour workday on Fridays, and an extension of the retirement age (up to 64 years). Management had proposed a base salary increase to 101,000 KRW, a performance-related bonus of 450% plus 14.5 million KRW, and the issuance of 20 shares of stock. However, the union rejected this offer as falling short of members' expectations, leading to a declaration of negotiation breakdown.
