[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Naver Informs Government That Personal Data Security Enhancement for Line Users Should Be Addressed by Line-Yahoo
Naver has informed the government that the enhancement of personal data security for Line users is a matter that should be addressed by Line-Yahoo.
According to industry sources on the 21st, Naver responded to a recent inquiry from the Ministry of Science and ICT about whether the government could support the strengthening of Line-Yahoo's security systems by stating that "security enhancement issues should be handled primarily by Line-Yahoo in Japan."
Naver also explained that most of the data security improvements need to be decided and resolved within Japan’s local systems. Line-Yahoo, which has announced plans to complete its network separation from Naver by March 2026, is expected to focus on security measures leading up to the full separation.
Naver has previously maintained a stance of resolving issues autonomously, citing the matter as a corporate issue between companies. Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon recently testified at a National Assembly committee meeting, stating that corporate executives should strive to act in the best interests of the company and shareholders, and that private entities should have opportunities to make autonomous decisions.
The government has expressed its intention to respect Naver’s autonomous decision-making while also noting that government agencies such as the Korea Internet & Security Agency may intervene if necessary for improving security governance.
