[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) has decided to impose corrective measures and fines on Samsung Electronics following a radiation exposure incident at its Giheung plant in May. The commission is also considering referring the case to the prosecution for investigation due to unverified manual manipulation.

At the 201st NSSC meeting held on the 25th, the investigation results and action plan for the radiation exposure incident at Samsung’s Giheung plant were presented.

The incident occurred on May 27th when two maintenance workers were exposed to radiation while servicing an X-ray fluorescence analyzer due to a malfunction in the safety interlock system. Both workers are currently receiving medical treatment.

The radiation exposure for both workers exceeded the annual skin exposure limit (0.5 sieverts/year). One of the workers also surpassed the whole-body dose limit (50 millisieverts/year). For comparison, a typical chest X-ray exposes a person to about 0.1 millisieverts.

The NSSC attributed the incident to overall mismanagement by Samsung Electronics and decided to impose corrective actions and fines.
