[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] In response to rising concerns over electric vehicle (EV) fires, the South Korean government will mandate the disclosure of key information related to battery manufacturers and production technologies. Additionally, the planned "EV Battery Certification System," initially scheduled for February next year, will be implemented ahead of schedule this October.
During a national policy meeting on the 6th, chaired by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the government confirmed these measures as part of the "Safety Management Measures for Electric Vehicle Fires." The meeting included representatives from various ministries, including the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The government will enhance its management system across the entire lifecycle of EV production and operation. The EV Battery Certification System, which ensures battery safety through government verification, will be enacted in October.
Furthermore, the government will require public disclosure of critical battery information, such as capacity, rated voltage, peak power, cell manufacturer and type, and key raw materials, to enhance transparency and safety.
