[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics has taken a significant step towards entering the Gallium Nitride (GaN) foundry market by investing in equipment for GaN power semiconductor production during the second quarter.
According to industry sources on the 2nd, Samsung has acquired a small amount of equipment to begin mass production of GaN power semiconductors.
GaN is a next-generation power semiconductor material known for its superior durability under high temperatures and high voltages, as well as its greater power efficiency compared to silicon. Due to these advantages, demand for GaN semiconductors is rising across various industries, including IT, telecommunications, and automotive.
Recognizing the growth potential of the GaN power semiconductor industry, Samsung Electronics has been actively pursuing entry into this market.
At the "Samsung Foundry Forum 2023" held in Silicon Valley last June, Samsung officially announced plans to begin offering 8-inch GaN power semiconductor foundry services in 2025, targeting the consumer, data center, and automotive sectors.
