[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) in South Korea announced on Thursday that it is investigating claims regarding Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, allegedly recording private conversations.

PIPC Chairman Ko Hak-soo stated during a regular press briefing at the Government Complex Seoul in Jongno, "The Commission is in the process of understanding what occurred and what role it can play, prompted by reports from the U.S. regarding Apple Siri."

Apple previously agreed to a settlement of $95 million (approximately 140 billion KRW) in a U.S. class-action lawsuit over allegations of illegal data collection. Consumers accused Siri of recording private conversations and sharing the data with third parties, including advertisers.

The Commission emphasized its focus on balancing AI-driven industry growth with robust personal data protection as one of its main objectives for the year.
