[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SK Group is partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to construct a large-scale, AI-dedicated data center in the Mipo National Industrial Complex in Ulsan, South Korea.
According to industry sources on June 15, the two companies plan to hold a launch ceremony for the "SK-AWS Data Center" within the month, followed by a groundbreaking ceremony in August. The facility will be built on a 36,000-square-meter site in Hwangseong-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan. Phase one is scheduled to go online by November 2027 with a capacity of approximately 40 megawatts (MW), expanding to a total of 100MW by February 2029.
This marks Korea’s first AI infrastructure to feature a dedicated 100MW-scale GPU-based system, expected to house around 60,000 graphics processing units (GPUs).
SK Group will mobilize its core affiliates—such as SK Telecom and SK Broadband—to build an integrated AI platform that combines cloud technology with manufacturing capabilities. The Ulsan Mipo site was chosen for its robust power supply infrastructure and strategic location near SK Gas’s power plant, which is expected to create significant synergy.
The nearby SK Gas facility is the world’s first gigawatt-scale combined cycle power plant capable of using both LNG and LPG. The site’s ability to utilize LNG cold energy for data center cooling adds further operational advantages.
