[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Concerts by BTS have driven a sharp increase in foreign tourist spending in Korea, with total card expenditures estimated at KRW 55.5 billion over a four-month period, according to Hana Card.
Hana Card said its analysis of foreign card transaction data from January 1 to April 12—covering the period leading up to and following the BTS world tour Arirang concerts—showed that average spending per visitor reached approximately KRW 1.85 million, including airfare, accommodation, and local consumption.
The analysis was based on payment data from 30,000 foreign fans who purchased concert tickets through NOL Universe for shows held on April 9 and April 11–12.
By nationality, Japanese fans accounted for the largest share of ticket purchases at 32%. Areas surrounding the concert venue, Goyang Stadium, experienced a significant “BTS effect.” During the concert week (April 6–12), the number of foreign card transactions in nearby commercial districts surged 807% compared to the previous week, while total spending increased 231%.
By category, transaction growth was most pronounced in convenience stores (up 1,069%), followed by cafes (1,109%), shopping (629%), and restaurants (600%).
Foreign fans purchased an average of 2.1 tickets per person, highlighting strong demand not only for attendance but also for group travel and shared experiences tied to the concerts.
