Fire at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard Leaves One Worker Missing

[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] ULSAN, April 9, 2026 — A fire broke out at the Ulsan shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, leaving one worker missing, authorities said.

According to the company, the fire occurred at approximately 1:58 p.m. on April 9 aboard a South Korean Navy submarine that was undergoing maintenance at the shipyard in Dong-gu, Ulsan.

Fire authorities issued a Level 1 response at 2:38 p.m. and deployed around 30 pieces of equipment to contain the blaze. The main flames were brought under control by approximately 3:04 p.m.

At the time of the incident, about 40 people were reportedly on board the submarine. One worker remains unaccounted for, and search operations are currently underway.

Authorities said the missing individual is a woman in her 60s employed by a subcontractor of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
