[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The three-day "final negotiations" between Samsung Electronics' labor union and management ended in failure on the 31st.

The union plans to hold a press conference in front of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong's residence on the 1st, urging a resolution to the strike. However, it seems unlikely that the press conference will provide a breakthrough, and there is growing attention on the union's next steps, as it may lose its status as the representative bargaining union that led the strike.

According to industry sources, Samsung Electronics and the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union held negotiations over three days starting from the 29th at an office in Giheung, Gyeonggi Province, but talks broke down in the afternoon of the 31st.

During the intensive negotiation period, both sides reportedly managed to narrow their differences on some issues but ultimately failed to reach a compromise.

The company is said to have offered concessions such as recognizing eight hours of paid union activity for the union’s general assembly, providing 500,000 KRW in leisure points to all employees, considering union input when improving performance-based pay criteria, and reducing the mandatory annual leave days for 2024 from 15 to 10.

While these offers partially align with the union's demands, which include a guaranteed day off for the union's founding anniversary, a 3.5% basic wage increase for all union members, improvements to the performance bonus system, and compensation for economic losses due to the strike, the two sides ultimately could not bridge their differences, leading to the breakdown in negotiations.

With the failure of the final negotiations, the union is expected to continue its strike for the time being. The union plans to hold a press conference in front of Chairman Lee Jae-yong's residence in Yongsan, Seoul, on the 1st, to urge for a resolution to the strike.

Although a final agreement was not reached, Samsung Electronics is reportedly committed to continuing dialogue with the union.
