[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Amazon has reportedly canceled a number of orders for products manufactured in China and other Asian countries, without prior notice, according to a recent Bloomberg report.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported on April 9 (local time) that orders for beach chairs, scooters, air conditioners, and other goods were abruptly halted following U.S. President Donald Trump’s April 2 announcement of plans to impose tariffs on imports from over 180 countries and regions, including China, Vietnam, and Thailand.
Given the timing and lack of advance warning, some vendors believe the cancellations are a preemptive response to the anticipated tariffs. The move suggests Amazon may be seeking to reduce its exposure to rising trade tensions triggered by the Trump administration, Bloomberg added.
One vendor, who has been selling Chinese-made beach chairs on Amazon for over a decade, said they received an email last week stating that some orders had been “mistakenly placed” and would be canceled. The message did not mention tariffs, but the vendor claims the decision left them scrambling to find alternative buyers for roughly $500,000 worth of already-manufactured goods.
Fearing retaliation, the vendor requested anonymity and said Amazon has never canceled orders in this manner before.
Scott Miller, an e-commerce consultant and former Amazon vendor manager, confirmed that several of his clients also experienced sudden order cancellations for products made in China and other Asian countries.
An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
In its annual report released in February, Amazon had listed international trade disputes as a potential business risk. According to Bloomberg, products purchased directly by Amazon from third-party vendors account for approximately 40% of all items sold on its platform.
