[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] GS Retail announced on Thursday that it had identified a potential data breach involving 1.58 million personal records on its home shopping website.
Last month, a hacking attack led to the exposure of personal information from approximately 90,000 users on its convenience store website.
According to GS Retail, "We detected unusual login attempts using stolen IDs and passwords from other websites. Upon further analysis, we discovered that customer information had been compromised on our convenience store website and promptly notified the affected users via text messages."
Expanding its investigation to all of its online platforms, GS Retail analyzed login records from the past year and found that similar hacking techniques had been used to breach its home shopping website between June 21 last year and February 13 this year, affecting approximately 1.58 million users.
The exposed personal information includes ten types of data: name, gender, date of birth, contact information, address, user ID, email, marital status, wedding anniversary, and personal customs clearance code.
GS Retail confirmed that financial information, including membership points and payment methods, remained secure.
In response, the company immediately blocked the IP addresses and attack patterns used in the breach and locked affected accounts on the home shopping website to prevent further access.
Additionally, GS Retail strengthened its login verification procedures and advised users to update their passwords.
To address the incident, the company established an Information Security Task Force, involving top executives, to manage the recovery process. Moving forward, this task force will be permanently maintained to prevent future breaches.
GS Retail also plans to enhance its cybersecurity measures by increasing investments in data protection, adopting the latest security technologies, upgrading its systems, and reinforcing security policies and personnel.
