[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] SK Telecom has decided to invest $200 million (approximately 280 billion KRW) in Smart Global Holdings (SGH), a US-based AI data center integration solutions provider. This is SKT's largest investment in the AI sector, and the two companies will collaborate on building AI data centers in the future.
According to SKT on the 16th, they have signed a convertible preferred stock investment agreement with SGH and plan to secure about a 10% stake through conversion to common stock. Through this agreement, the two companies will cooperate in AI infrastructure businesses, including the construction and operation of data centers. SGH, headquartered in Silicon Valley, is an AI data center integration solutions company that designs, builds, and operates AI clusters composed of large-scale GPU servers, with a cumulative deployment of 75,000 GPUs. SGH was listed on NASDAQ in 2017 and recorded $1.44 billion (approximately 2 trillion KRW) in revenue last year.
The two companies plan to further solidify their partnership this year by collaborating across various AI infrastructure business areas, including AI data centers, edge AI, and future memory solutions.
SKT, which is advancing into the domestic and international AI data center markets, expects a synergistic effect by combining SGH's capabilities in building and operating AI clusters with their own solutions in data center management systems and immersion cooling. Additionally, they plan to develop 'Telco Edge AI Solutions,' integrating communication infrastructure and AI into industrial-specific edge solutions.
