[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee of South Korea announced on June 19 that it will initiate collective dispute mediation in response to the recent data breach involving SK Telecom (KRX: 017670).

The committee has officially launched proceedings for two of the four collective mediation requests filed to date, involving a total of 147 individuals. The remaining two cases, which collectively include 3,363 applicants, are expected to be processed once the required documents are supplemented.

The mediation process, which provides an out-of-court resolution to privacy-related disputes, must be completed within 60 days of the announcement of its commencement. However, the committee resolved to delay the official public notice and the recruitment of additional participants until the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) completes its investigation and issues sanctions against SK Telecom.

The committee explained that, given the likelihood of additional applications related to the SKT breach, it is necessary to coordinate further participation after informing the public of the overall status of the case. The mediation will be temporarily suspended until the PIPC’s decision is finalized, at which point the process will resume.
