[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] LS Cable & System announced on the 10th that it has begun mass production of 525kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables.
This product boasts the highest voltage among existing DC cables, and only a handful of companies worldwide have the production capacity for such cables.
The mass-produced cables will be used in TenneT's 2GW transmission network projects, "BalWin4" and "LanWin1." These projects involve connecting the North Sea offshore wind farms to the inland areas of Germany and the Netherlands using HVDC cables.
In May of last year, LS Cable & System signed a long-term supply contract worth over 2 trillion KRW with TenneT, marking the largest single order amount for any cable company worldwide.
HVDC technology allows for the transmission of large currents over long distances with minimal loss compared to alternating current (AC). Consequently, the adoption of HVDC cables is increasing for long-distance transmission networks. In Europe, HVDC cables are primarily used in offshore wind farms and interconnection projects between national power grids to expand transmission networks.
