[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] LG Energy Solution has secured a victory in a patent infringement lawsuit against Chinese battery maker Sunwoda, regarding key battery cell structure technology.

Patent management firm Tulip Innovation announced on July 24 that the German court had ruled in favor of LG Energy Solution on July 17 in a case involving electrode and separator technology used in lithium-ion batteries.

The court determined that the prismatic battery supplied by Sunwoda for the electric vehicle Dacia Spring infringed on LG Energy Solution’s “electrode assembly structure” patent. This technology integrates coated separators and layered electrodes into a robust single assembly, preventing layer separation — a design widely used in high-power, high-capacity batteries for EVs and energy storage systems (ESS).

As a result, the German court ordered:

A sales ban on the infringing batteries in Germany

Recall and destruction of remaining inventory

Disclosure of accounting records

Compensatory damages

The ruling is immediately enforceable, though Sunwoda retains the right to appeal.

This marks LG Energy Solution’s third legal win against Sunwoda in patent disputes. In May, LGES and Tulip Innovation had also prevailed in two separate lawsuits concerning SRS-coated separator technology, resulting in the first-ever sales ban in the German EV battery market.

LG Energy Solution emphasized its commitment to combating “patent free-riding” in the battery sector, aiming to establish a fair global licensing ecosystem. The company continues to protect its intellectual property across all battery segments, from small IT batteries to large EV cells.

An LGES spokesperson stated:

“As a rule-setter in the battery industry, we will continue to safeguard our proprietary technologies and lead the formation of a fair, rational licensing market to ensure healthy competition.”
