[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] According to industry sources, LG Electronics, considered a global "big tech," has postponed the release of its XR devices, which it was co-developing with Meta, from next year to 2027.
The project was reportedly abandoned just over two months after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited South Korea at the end of February and formalized collaboration with LG Electronics CEO Cho Jun-wan.
In the IT industry, it is analyzed that LG Electronics and Meta had differences in opinion during this project, and it was concluded that there was not significant synergy, leading to this decision.
However, this does not mean that LG Electronics has completely stopped its XR device development. Aside from this particular project, LG Electronics had plans to launch an XR device project targeting 2027, and it intends to continue with that. There is also a possibility that Meta may be involved in this project.
Furthermore, LG Electronics is considering cooperation with global big tech companies similar to Meta to expand the XR ecosystem. Amazon is reportedly one of the companies LG Electronics is most actively negotiating with.
