Major Fire Breaks Out at Kolon Life Science Gumi Factory Again, Six Months After Previous Incident

[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Kolon Life Science Gumi Factory Catches Fire Again, Six Months After Previous Incident

A fire broke out at Kolon Life Science's Gumi Plant 2, located in the Gumi 1st General Industrial Complex in Eomo-myeon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, at 10:08 PM on the 16th.

One employee inhaled smoke and received hospital treatment, while seven other employees inside the factory managed to evacuate on their own.

The fire authorities issued a Level 1 response, deploying 30 vehicles, including the 119 Special Response Team and Central 119 Rescue Headquarters, along with 71 personnel to fight the blaze. A Level 1 response means the entire personnel from the relevant fire station are dispatched.

So far, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.

Fire authorities are continuing to search for any potential victims inside and outside the building while working to extinguish the fire.

The Kolon Life Science Gumi Plant 2 is a four-story reinforced concrete building covering a total area of 12,317㎡, consisting of 21 buildings. The fire is currently confined to just one building.

The facility is known to handle a large quantity of hazardous chemicals, including 23 types of toxic substances classified as level 4 and 5.
