[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Former U.S. President Donald Trump on April 24 (local time) stated that the United States should declare China in default after it refused to accept delivery of aircraft from American aerospace manufacturer Boeing amid ongoing trade tensions.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “China promised to purchase Boeing aircraft but has refused to take delivery of beautifully made planes,” calling this a small example of how China has “taken advantage of the U.S. for years.”
His remarks follow reports that Chinese airlines declined to accept Boeing aircraft, citing the steep U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods—reportedly up to 145%.
Trump’s strong statement came just a day after he struck a more conciliatory tone, saying a decision on reducing tariffs on China would be made “within two to three weeks.”
He also criticized China for its insufficient efforts to curb the distribution of fentanyl, a potent opioid linked to a major health crisis in the U.S. Trump noted that despite previously imposing a 125% reciprocal tariff and an additional 20% fentanyl tariff on China, the substance continues to flow into the U.S. via Mexico and Canada.
“Fentanyl is killing hundreds of thousands of our citizens. It must stop immediately,” Trump declared.
