[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Hyundai Rotem has recently signed a main contract to supply additional two-story passenger cars for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the United States. The deal, valued at $175.79 million (approximately 2.4 billion won), was announced on the 16th.
The MBTA's two-story passenger car project is aimed at addressing the increasing commuter demand and replacing aging cars to ensure passenger convenience and safety.
This marks Hyundai Rotem's third supply contract for MBTA's two-story passenger cars. Hyundai Rotem first secured this contract in 2008 and then in 2019 for additional units. The latest batch of cars is expected to be delivered sequentially, with the completion slated for this year.
Hyundai Rotem entered the U.S. market in 2006, securing contracts for two-story passenger cars in California and Florida, as well as electric trains in Pennsylvania. The company has since demonstrated its expertise in international rail vehicle projects, including the Denver electric train project in 2010 and recently being selected as a supplier for Los Angeles Metro electric trains.
