[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] OCI announced on November 19 that it will begin supplying semiconductor-grade phosphoric acid to DB HiTek’s semiconductor foundry in Bucheon, South Korea, starting this month.
Semiconductor-grade phosphoric acid is a key material used in the etching process of semiconductor wafers, which are circular plates that serve as the base material for integrated circuits. This etching process, involving the use of liquid or gas etchants, selectively removes parts of the wafer to create the semiconductor circuit patterns.
DB HiTek, a company specializing in 8-inch wafer foundries, operates two factories—one in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, and another in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province. The Bucheon plant has a monthly production capacity of 91,000 wafers, while the Eumseong plant can produce 63,000 wafers per month. OCI expanded its supply of semiconductor phosphoric acid to DB HiTek’s Bucheon plant after having already supplied the Eumseong plant since 2021. An OCI representative commented, "The expansion to the Bucheon plant is significant, as the existing line using products from other companies had higher barriers to entry than new plants."
OCI has been producing semiconductor phosphoric acid since 2007 at its plant in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, with an annual production capacity of 25,000 tons. The company supplies its products to major domestic semiconductor manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and SK KEYFOUNDRY.
