[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Hanwha Aerospace's K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer to be Exported to Romania
The Ministry of National Defense announced that the scale of Romania's self-propelled howitzer acquisition project is $920 million (approximately 1.3 trillion KRW), making it the largest weapon acquisition project in Romania in the past seven years. Romania plans to acquire 54 K9 self-propelled howitzers and 36 K10 ammunition resupply vehicles. Once the contract is signed, Romania will become the ninth export destination of the K9 howitzer and the sixth NATO member country to operate it.
The contract will be officially signed upon the completion of final negotiations between Hanwha Aerospace and the Romanian Arms Agency.
Romania, marking its 20th anniversary of NATO membership this year, plans to increase its defense budget from the current 2% of GDP to 2.5%. The country plans to invest $39.9 billion (approximately 54 trillion KRW) in major weapons acquisitions by 2032 to actively respond to regional security needs.
