[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Intel has once again postponed the completion of its semiconductor foundry in Ohio.
On the 28th (local time), Intel announced that the first foundry plant under construction in New Albany, Ohio, will now be completed by 2030.
The company is investing $28 billion to build two foundry facilities in Ohio. The first plant is now expected to begin operations between 2030 and 2031, marking a delay of more than five years from the original target of 2025. This follows an earlier postponement to 2026.
With the first plant’s delay, Intel also confirmed that the second Ohio facility will be completed in 2031 and begin operations in 2032.
Intel has outlined plans to invest up to $100 billion in establishing a manufacturing complex in the New Albany area.
The postponement is seen as a consequence of Intel’s ongoing financial struggles. Last year, the company announced a large-scale restructuring plan to cut $10 billion in costs, including laying off 15,000 employees, which accounted for 15% of its workforce.
Former CEO Pat Gelsinger abruptly resigned in December, and Intel is now reportedly being considered for partial acquisition by Taiwan’s TSMC and U.S. semiconductor firm Broadcom.
