[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] SK Hynix will resume construction of a new plant in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, which had been temporarily suspended. The plant, which will be completed next year, will produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

SK Hynix held a board meeting on the 24th and decided to invest about 5.3 trillion won in a new fab (semiconductor factory) 'M15X' to be built in Cheongju as a DRAM production base. SK Hynix plans to start construction at the end of this month and start mass production after completion in November next year. It also plans to invest more than 20 trillion won in M15X in the long run by sequentially investing in equipment.

It is the first time in a year that construction of a new plant in Cheongju will resume. Earlier, SK Hynix announced in 2022 that it would start construction of M15X at Cheongju Technopolis Industrial Complex, but stopped construction in April last year as the memory market froze sharply due to weak IT demand.

However, as memory prices, including DRAMs, began to rebound after the end of last year, the company resumed its new plant project, which had been delayed. It was not decided which semiconductor to produce in M15X, DRAM or NAND flash, but this time it was decided to be a DRAM line.

SK Hynix is also pursuing the 'Yongin Semiconductor Cluster' project, which invests more than 120 trillion won in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The construction process rate of the Yongin cluster site is about 26%, which is faster than the existing goal. The first semiconductor plant in Yongin will begin construction in March next year and be completed in 2027.
