[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Recent data indicates a notable shift in the domestic web search market, with Google and Bing together exceeding a 40% market share. According to InternetTrend, as of August 7, the search engine market share in South Korea is as follows:
Naver: 54.26%
Google: 37.61%
Bing: 3.83%
Daum: 3.14%
Combined, Google and Bing hold a 41.44% share, marking a rise from 39.79% in the previous month. This increase is a significant development, as Google, despite commanding around 90% of the global search market, has traditionally lagged behind Naver in South Korea.
In August, Google’s share has continued to climb, reaching an average of 37.61% compared to 36.24% the previous month, reflecting a steady increase from 34.22% a year ago. Bing’s average share has risen to 3.55%, surpassing Daum’s 3.40% for the first time. This surge for Bing follows the integration of AI chatbots, which has bolstered its competitive edge against Google.
Conversely, local search engines Naver and Daum are experiencing a decline in their market shares. Naver’s average share dropped slightly to 55.58% from 56.09% a year earlier, while Daum's fell by 1.12 percentage points.
The growing influence of Google and Bing, alongside the decline of local players, highlights a shifting landscape in the web search market.
