84% of Counterfeits Identified in First Half of Year are Chinese-Made, with 'Chanel' Fakes Most Prevalent

[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] More Than 80% of Intellectual Property Violation Imports in H1 This Year Originated from China


In the first half of this year, over 80% of the intellectual property violation imports detected by customs authorities were found to have originated from China.

According to data received from the Korea Customs Service by Representative Park Seong-hoon of the ruling People Power Party on the 15th, the total value of intellectual property violation imports detected at the border from January to June 2023 amounted to 93.4 billion won across 34 cases.

Among these, products originating from China accounted for 78.1 billion won (24 cases), making up 83.6% of the total.

This is similar to last year's total detection amount of 371.3 billion won, of which 95.4% (354.1 billion won) were from China.

By brand, counterfeit Chanel products topped the list with 48.7 billion won, representing 52.1% of the total. This was followed by Goyard (7.5 billion won), Louis Vuitton (4.1 billion won), and Gucci (2.0 billion won).

By category, bags accounted for 65.3 billion won, or 69.9% of the total, while clothing and textiles followed with 19.6 billion won (21.0%).
