[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Coupang, South Korea’s leading e-commerce platform, has temporarily suspended several TV home shopping sellers from its open market service following intellectual property (IP) infringement complaints.
According to industry sources on Tuesday, Coupang suspended the online sales accounts of GS Shop and Hyundai Home Shopping as of April 1. Each company reportedly had around 2,000 product listings removed from the platform.
The action comes in response to IP violation claims. In February, a major domestic electronics manufacturer (Company A) filed a complaint with Coupang, accusing the sellers of unauthorized use of product images. Additionally, a global tech company (Company B) alleged that the companies were selling imitation products.
In line with its policies, Coupang gave the sellers a one-month window to provide an explanation, but no sufficient response was received. As a result, the company said it had no choice but to halt sales. However, Coupang added that it will review the matter and lift account restrictions if valid documentation is submitted.
Negotiations between Coupang and the affected sellers are expected to begin as early as April 10.
Meanwhile, NS Home Shopping also faced a similar IP-related complaint and experienced a temporary sales suspension. However, after going through a clarification process, it resumed product listings at the end of last month.
