[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] SK On's U.S. factory will begin mass-producing batteries for Hyundai Motor's electric vehicles starting in October.
According to industry sources on the 22nd, SK Battery America (SKBA), SK On's U.S. subsidiary, is set to start producing EV batteries for Hyundai at its Georgia plant next month.
Previously, SK On had been supplying batteries to Ford, but has been working to convert part of its production line to serve Hyundai's electric vehicle needs.
This move aligns with the mutual interests of both companies—Hyundai needs to meet the requirements of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), while SK On seeks to increase the operational efficiency of its Georgia plant.
With the line conversion, the plant’s utilization rate is expected to rise significantly. Hyundai Motor Group is also preparing to operate its large-scale dedicated EV production facility, the "Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America" (HMGMA), in Savannah, Georgia.
