[Alpha Biz= Kim Sangjin] It was confirmed that the black boxes of the Jeju Air flight, consisting of the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), failed to record data for about four minutes before the crash.

On Saturday, the Aircraft and Railway Accident Investigation Committee (ARAIC) reported that both the FDR and CVR stopped recording during the last four minutes before the aircraft collided with the localizer (a directional guidance system). The data was missing from 8:59 AM, when the pilot sent a mayday signal due to a bird strike, until the crash at 9:03 AM. The ARAIC is currently investigating the cause of the recording failure.

The aircraft's black box consists of the FDR and CVR. The FDR records the aircraft's flight path and the operational status of key equipment, providing various information such as altitude, speed, and landing gear status. The CVR stores communications between the pilot and air traffic controllers, conversations in the cockpit, and sounds like warning alarms and operational noises inside the aircraft. The black box of the Boeing 737-800 involved in the accident can store up to 25 hours of FDR data and up to 2 hours of CVR data.

The ARAIC extracted CVR data at the Gimpo Airport Test and Analysis Center, converting it into audio files on the 2nd and completed the transcript on the 4th. The FDR, due to damage to the connection line, was sent to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the United States, where two ARAIC investigators attended while data extraction and analysis took place from the 7th to the 11th.
