[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] SK On will supply batteries for Genesis' first large electric SUV, the GV90.

According to the battery industry on June 3rd, SK On is preparing to install production lines at its Seosan plant in South Chungcheong Province to manufacture pouch-type Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) batteries for the GV90. The batteries are expected to be delivered around the third quarter of next year. SK On's batteries for the GV90 will be supplied to Hyundai Motor's Ulsan plant and the new electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle plant, Meta Plant America (HMGMA), in Georgia, USA, which is scheduled to start operations in the fourth quarter.

Among the three major battery manufacturers in South Korea, none have yet supplied batteries for a large electric SUV. Even Kia's EV9 is categorized as a mid-size SUV. Meanwhile, China's Geely Automobile is set to launch a model equivalent to the GV90, the 'Galaxy E5', this year, which will use Chinese-made batteries.
