[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] U.S. President Donald Trump has finalized his decision to impose a 25% universal tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday (local time), triggering swift responses from both nations.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on February 1 that while Mexico does not seek confrontation with the U.S., she has proposed security and public health negotiations. However, she also instructed her economy minister to implement a Plan B, which includes tariff and non-tariff countermeasures, signaling both negotiation and potential retaliation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to Trump’s executive order, saying on X, “We didn’t want this, but Canada is ready.” Trudeau also mentioned that he had met with governors and his cabinet earlier in the day and planned to speak with Mexican President Sheinbaum soon.
