[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) on March 17 announced a recall of a processed meat product after salmonella, a foodborne pathogen, was detected.
The affected product, “Andong-style braised chicken,” was manufactured by Daesang Cham Food and sold by retailer Homeplus. Authorities have ordered an immediate suspension of sales and a full recall.
The recall applies to products labeled with an expiration date of April 11, 2026.
A total of 515 units (422.3 kilograms) of the product, each weighing 820 grams, were produced.
Under food safety regulations, a product is deemed non-compliant if even one out of five test samples is positive. In this case, all five samples tested positive for salmonella.
The MFDS has instructed the companies to promptly carry out the recall and urged consumers who have purchased the product to stop consuming it and return it to the place of purchase.
Consumers can report illegal food-related activities via the government’s food safety hotline or through the smartphone app “Naesonan” (Food Safety Information).
Separately, the ministry said it has confirmed that no imports have been made into South Korea of chicken feet or related processed products from a Chinese food processing facility recently found to have used hydrogen peroxide for bleaching.
Under current regulations, livestock products such as chicken feet can only be imported after passing import hygiene assessments, and overseas facilities must be registered with the MFDS. Fresh chicken feet from China are not permitted for import under these rules.
