[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics, Meta, Netflix, and AWS were selected for digital disaster management this year but were found to have insufficient measures to prevent system outages. As a result, the government has issued corrective action notifications.

According to data submitted to the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee by Rep. Kim Jang-gyum of the ruling People Power Party on the 10th, the Communications Disaster Management Committee recently reviewed the disaster management plans of four value-added telecommunications companies, including Samsung Electronics, Meta, Netflix, and AWS, as well as eight data center companies like LG CNS. The committee confirmed the review results and required corrective actions.

Since the 2022 fire at Kakao’s data center, the "KakaoTalk Outage Prevention Law" has been implemented. The law amended the Framework Act on Broadcasting and Telecommunications, expanding the scope of the government's "Digital Disaster Management" targets to include value-added telecom operators and data center businesses of a certain size, which was previously limited to telecommunications providers.

The Ministry of Science and ICT had already issued corrective actions to Kakao, Naver, and Google, and now Samsung Electronics, Meta, and other companies are also being required to make improvements. This marks the first time that all seven value-added telecom operators included in this year's digital disaster management target have been issued corrective actions.
