[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Imposes 11.7 Billion KRW in Fines on Car Manufacturers and Importers for Selling Non-Compliant Vehicles

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) announced on the 10th that it has imposed fines totaling 11.7 billion KRW on 18 car manufacturers and importers for selling vehicles that did not meet safety standards.

The ministry explained that the fines were calculated based on the sales revenue of the non-compliant vehicles, the corrective action rate, and the maximum fine limit set by the Automobile Management Act. The period in question covers from July 2023 to the end of December.

Additionally, fines were imposed on six manufacturers and importers who continued to sell vehicles without correcting the defects, with a fine of 1.5 billion KRW. Renault Korea Motors also received a 5 million KRW fine for failing to notify buyers of defect corrections before sales.

To improve recall correction rates, MOLIT has required manufacturers and importers with low correction rates to re-notify vehicle owners of recall plans. The Automobile Recall Center's website offers information on recalls, and drivers can check if their vehicle is subject to a recall during inspections, as well as monitor the correction progress regularly.
