[Alpha Biz= Kim Sangjin] KakaoPay, which was fined approximately 6 billion KRW for leaking personal data to China's Alipay, stated that the action was "a necessary procedure for creating a secure payment environment" and vowed to continue providing additional explanations.
In response to the Privacy Commission's fine decision on Thursday, KakaoPay expressed, "We sincerely apologize for causing concerns regarding Apple App Store payments for our users who trust and use KakaoPay." The company added, "KakaoPay was the first domestic mobile payment service to offer App Store payments to alleviate the excessive double commission burden that users previously had to pay.
We believe this action was necessary to provide a secure payment environment, and we have diligently explained the rationale for it. However, we deeply regret that this is the outcome."
KakaoPay further stated, "We will carefully review future countermeasures and continue to provide explanations. We will work hard to make KakaoPay a platform that users can trust and use more securely."
Earlier, KakaoPay faced allegations of providing personal data of approximately 40 million users to Alipay without consent for the purpose of user evaluations on Apple’s service. The Privacy Commission ruled that KakaoPay's actions constituted an "illegal transfer of personal data without legal grounds" and imposed a fine of 5.968 billion KRW.
