[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hanwha Ocean announced on the 2nd that it has won four liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers from Asian shipowners. The contract amount is 1.2391 trillion won, and the period is until August 2027.
Hanwha Ocean did not reveal the specific client, but considering the shipping price, it is estimated to be the second Qatar project. As a result, Hanwha Ocean has won a total of 12 LNG carriers in Qatar's second project. A total of 31 ships were awarded at the time of Qatar's first project order in 2022.
Previously, Hanwha Ocean successfully delivered 26 ships, or nearly half of the total 53 ships, in the Qatar project, which ran from 2004 to 2007. At that time, Hanwha Ocean built LNG carriers of all sizes, including 16 210,000-square-meter Q-Flexs and three 260,000-square-meter Q-Maxs.
As of this year, Hanwha Ocean has won a total of 16 ships worth about $3.27 billion, including 12 LNG carriers, two super-large crude oil carriers (VLCC) and two ammonia carriers (VLAC).
Hanwha Ocean will continue its profitability-oriented selection orders this year and expand its capacity to build 22 LNG carriers annually to 24 next year.
