[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] President Lee Jae-myung on the 30th ordered a review of forming a joint investigation team between prosecutors and police to probe allegations that the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (commonly known as the Unification Church) engaged in political lobbying.

His instruction reflects concerns that relying solely on stalled bipartisan talks over appointing a special prosecutor may delay fact-finding, underscoring the need for a swift and rigorous government-led investigation. Observers say the move is also aimed at minimizing political fallout, as figures expected to run in next year’s June 3 local elections — including Democratic Party lawmaker Jeon Jae-soo, a potential Busan mayoral candidate — have been mentioned in connection with the case.

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting at the presidential office in Yongsan, President Lee said, “Regardless of whether someone is from the ruling or opposition party, and regardless of their status, everyone must be investigated thoroughly and held accountable where responsibility lies. Only then can we prevent this from happening again.” He added, “Rather than waiting for a special prosecutor, I ask that the Ministry of the Interior and Safety review forming a joint investigation team with the police and prosecution.”

Lee stressed that alleged collusion between religion and politics violates the constitutional principle of separation of church and state and poses a serious threat to democracy. “Religious interference in politics through influence-peddling or collusion endangers the future of our democracy and our nation,” he said. “Even if the case is later transferred to a special prosecutor, it would be better for the prosecution and the Interior Ministry to form a team and begin work first.”

The president’s remarks signal a push for swift investigative action amid growing public scrutiny over the alleged political lobbying activities of the Unification Church.
