[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the 7th, Hyundai Rotem announced that its U.S. subsidiary, Hyundai Rotem USA, received a notice of award for an additional supply contract for double-decker coaches in Boston from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) on the 6th.
The contract is valued at $175.79 million (approximately 240 billion KRW). The specific duration of the project will be finalized upon the signing of the final contract. Although Hyundai Rotem did not disclose the number of coaches to be supplied to MBTA, it is known that the company has succeeded in increasing the profitability of the project compared to previous ones. This marks the third time Hyundai Rotem will supply double-decker coaches to MBTA. The first contract dates back to April 2008 when Hyundai Rotem won a contract worth approximately $170 million for 75 double-decker coaches after competing with Kawasaki, a Japanese railway vehicle manufacturer.
MBTA has introduced Hyundai Rotem's double-decker coaches to replace aging conventional coaches previously used for commuter trains in Boston, Massachusetts, in response to increasing passenger demand. Through this project, Hyundai Rotem has demonstrated its vehicle quality and business capabilities, laying the groundwork for additional orders.
Subsequently, in October 2019, Hyundai Rotem won a contract worth $278.58 million to supply 80 double-decker coaches to MBTA. Hyundai Rotem began delivery of the initial batch in early 2022 and is set to complete the supply this year. These coaches will be deployed on the new MBTA line, "South Coast Rail," which is scheduled to open this year, as well as on existing lines.
