[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Energy Solution has emerged as the global leader in Battery Management System (BMS) patents, outpacing its Chinese and Japanese rivals. With BMS gaining importance as a critical safety system amid rising concerns over electric vehicle fires, this achievement is seen as particularly significant.
On the 21st, LG Energy Solution, in collaboration with patent information specialist WIPS, conducted a comprehensive survey of BMS-related patents held by the top 10 battery companies in Korea, China, and Japan. The results showed that LG Energy Solution holds the most patents in this category.
The survey covered patents registered and filed in five countries—Korea, the United States, Europe, China, and Japan—between 2018 and 2022. During this period, LG Energy Solution registered a total of 3,425 BMS patents, with an overall portfolio of 5,475 patents when including earlier filings.
These figures represent approximately 73% of all BMS-related patents held by major Korean battery companies and about 40% of the total BMS patents held by the companies surveyed, which amount to roughly 13,500.
LG Energy Solution’s BMS patent count is 1.2 times higher than that of Chinese companies and 3.5 times more than that of Japanese companies. Notably, the company’s patent filings surged after its spin-off in 2020, with around 800 new BMS-related patents filed annually from 2020 to 2022. This accounts for about 87% of all BMS-related patents filed by Korean companies during the same period.
BMS technology monitors and controls battery conditions to ensure optimal performance, detecting and addressing issues such as voltage drops, abnormal degradation, and discharge anomalies. As the importance of BMS diagnostic solutions grows in the future mobility era, LG Energy Solution is focusing on enhancing its technological competitiveness.
The company’s BMS technology integrates cloud computing, big data, and machine learning to provide real-time analysis and more accurate diagnostics and predictions to users. The predictive accuracy of its safety diagnostic algorithms is 90%, the highest in the industry. Over 450 experts are currently working in LG Energy Solution’s BMS Development Center under the Chief Technology Officer, developing both hardware and software components of the BMS.
