[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) announced on May 13 that it has launched its first comprehensive market study into the rapidly growing subscription service sector, targeting both domestic and global platforms such as Netflix, ChatGPT, Coupang Wow, and YouTube Premium.

The move is aimed at identifying consumer protection issues and laying the groundwork for policy improvements, particularly regarding subscription cancellations and contract transparency.

The investigation will cover a total of 37 subscription services over a five-week period. The KFTC will collect data from major service providers via structured questionnaires, requesting additional documents as needed.
