[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On August 7, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Supply Agreement (PSA) with Norwegian state-owned energy company Equinor for the Donghae "Firefly Floating Wind Power Project," valued at 3.7 trillion won.

The agreement is a tangible result of discussions between Anders Opedal, Chairman of Equinor, and Choi Seong-an, Vice Chairman of Samsung Heavy Industries, during Opedal's visit to South Korea last month. The Firefly project is a floating wind power initiative to be built offshore, approximately 70 km from Ulsan, with a capacity of up to 750 megawatts (MW). Industry estimates suggest the total project cost could be around 2.7 billion dollars (about 3.7 trillion won).

If Equinor is ultimately selected as the project operator, Samsung Heavy Industries will exclusively manufacture the floating substructures for 50 units of 15MW floating wind turbines and perform the marshalling work to integrate these with towers and turbines. The government plans to hold a competitive bidding process for the offshore wind power project later this year and select the final operator.
