[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] POSCO proposed to the union a negotiation plan that calls for raising the basic salary by 150,000 won and introducing a four-day workweek every other week in negotiations for wages and collective agreements this year.
POSCO resumed negotiations on the 21st at its headquarters in Pohang with the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, the Federation of Korean Trade Unions' Korean Metal Workers' Unions, the leading negotiating union among multiple unions.
It has been 29 days since the 20th round of negotiations on August 23.
At that time, POSCO's labor union declared the breakdown of the negotiations, saying it failed to reach an agreement, held a temporary delegate meeting to pass the bill on the dispute, and has been in the process of the strike, including the launch of a large-scale dispute committee in front of Gwangyang Steel Mill and Pohang Iron & Steel Mill, respectively.
During the negotiations, the company proposed an increase in the basic wage by 150,000 won, a 70 percent extension of employment for retired retirees, the payment of 4 million won in shares, free lunch at the cafeteria and the introduction of a four-day workweek system every other week.
During the 20th round of negotiations, POSCO presented 11 wage issues and 32 compromise proposals to accept demands for revision of collective agreements.
At that time, the company proposed to raise the limit on housing loans from 90 million won to 120 million won, adjust the interest rate from 2.0 percent to 1.5 percent per year, and create 200,000 won in subsidies for the use of resort facilities.
It also proposed the establishment of 1 million won per year in scholarships for middle school students, the increase of childbirth incentives, the establishment of similar maternity leave for spouses, the improvement of congratulatory money, and the establishment of 2 million won in subsidies for the disabled per year.
POSCO's labor union has demanded 86 cases, including 23 wage demands, including a 13.1% increase in basic salary and the payment of 100 treasury shares to union members, and 63 revisions to collective agreements.
