[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Korea Zinc will take the lead in stabilizing its nickel supply chain, a key material for electric vehicle batteries, through the construction of an "all-in-one nickel smelter" that combines state-of-the-art eco-friendly smelting technology.
held a groundbreaking ceremony for the "all-in-one nickel refinery" with a production capacity of about 42,600 tons (based on the amount of nickel metal) per year at the Onsan Industrial Complex in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, attended by domestic and foreign VIP guests including Prime Minister Han Duk-soo, Ulsan Metropolitan City Mayor Kim Doo-kyum, National Assemblyman Park Sung-min, Korea Zinc Chairman Choi Yoon-beom and Chemco CEO Choi Nae-hyun.
The all-in-one nickel smelter, which Korea Zinc builds through its nickel sulfate subsidiary KEMCO, will invest a total of 506.3 billion won with the aim of commercial production in 2026.
Korea Zinc and Chemco handle all kinds of nickel-containing raw materials, including nickel mats and MHP of oxide, through the construction of the world's first all-in-one nickel smelter, while producing raw materials ranging from nickel sulfate to cobalt sulfate and precursor, while proactively responding to increasing demand for battery materials and components due to the expansion of the electric vehicle market. It will be possible to supply high-purity nickel sulfate from 2026, when commercial production begins in earnest.
