[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] A private-led small observation satellite will be launched into space for the first time in Korea.

Hanwha Systems announced on the 22nd that it will launch its own "Small Synthetic Radar (SAR) Satellite" into space from the southern sea of Jeju Island within this year. SAR is a system that creates a ground topography by shooting radar waves sequentially into the ground and the ocean from the air and synthesizing the fine time difference in which the radar waves return to the curved surface. Unlike ordinary satellites, video information can be obtained during daytime, nighttime, and bad weather.

Hanwha System explained that it received related technologies from the government and created satellites under the influence of the government's policy of transferring satellite technology to the private sector in order to quickly develop the Korean space industry. Hanwha System said, "As the private sector led the satellite launch, it is expected to signal the leap forward of the Korean new space industry 'K-Space'."

Hanwha System's small SAR satellite is a high-resolution earth observation satellite. Unlike ordinary satellites, payloads, main bodies, and solar panels are integrated. It can be designed to load as much as possible on the launch vehicle, which greatly reduces the launch cost.
