[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The shipbuilding industry, which succeeded in turning into a surplus in the third quarter, is expected to continue its boom next year as it is full of work. There is even an unusual scene of winning orders for Indian ships in 2028.
According to the shipbuilding industry on the 28th, all of the recently announced business results in the third quarter of this year have succeeded in turning into surplus. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering recorded sales of 5.11 trillion won and operating profit of 69 billion won in the third quarter of this year. Samsung Heavy Industries posted sales of 2.255 trillion won and operating profit of 75.8 billion won in the third quarter. Hanwha Ocean recorded sales of 1.9169 trillion won and operating profit of 74.1 billion won in the third quarter.
The three shipbuilders posted a surplus together in about 11 years since the fourth quarter of 2012, and their performance is likely to improve next year. This is because competition for low-priced orders will disappear and construction will take place mainly on liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, which are high-priced ships, through selective orders.
In fact, Hanwha Ocean, which achieved a surplus for the first time in 12 quarters since the fourth quarter of 2020, announced that it has won an order for a super-large ammonia carrier from a ship owner in Oceania for 163 billion won. In terms of dollars, the company expects to contribute to the company's profitability with ships amounting to $ 12.55 million per ship. Hanwha Ocean also won an order for a super-large ammonia carrier for $ 12.46 million on the 14th.
Against this backdrop, the shipbuilding industry is likely to win a series of orders for large LNG ships from Qatar and continue to win orders in the future, which is expected to continue the boom. Right now, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering signed a contract with Qatar Energy last month to build 17 LNG carriers of 174,000 cubic meters. The contract amount alone is about 5.2511 trillion won, the largest amount ever won in the Korean shipbuilding industry based on a single contract. The largest previous single contract order is for 16 container ships worth 3.9593 trillion won, which Samsung Heavy Industries won in July.
As Qatar's additional orders and demand for eco-friendly ships increase, South Korea's three shipbuilders, which have strengths in this field, are also expected to win new orders.
Due to the overflowing work, the company is even winning orders for supplies to be delivered in 2028. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering signed a contract with an African-based shipping company to build two LNG carriers for 698.1 billion won on the 14th. The delivery time is February 2028. Samsung Heavy Industries also won two LNG carriers for 659.2 billion won in June. As expected, the delivery time is February 2028.
