[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hanwha Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan proposed a non-carbon-powered gas carrier for the first time in the industry at the "world's first fossil fuel ship" session, the annual session of the 2024 World Economic Forum (Davos Forum), on the 17th (local time).
During the session, Vice Chairman Kim stressed, "The industry's first carbon-free gas carrier developed by Hanwha will be an important turning point for global decarbonization." Hanwha, which acquired Hanwha Ocean (042660) last year and entered the shipbuilding industry, is expanding its decarbonization area from renewable energy such as solar power, hydrogen and wind power to the ocean.
Hanwha is developing a gas turbine that operates only with 100% ammonia. Currently, the internal combustion engine of a ship has a limit of using ship oil at a ratio of 5 to 15 percent for stable combustion, even if eco-friendly fuels such as ammonia and methanol are used. The ammonia gas turbine being developed by Hanwha is a carbon-free technology that can operate only with 100% ammonia.
Vice Chairman Kim also announced a plan to demonstrate carbon-free gas carriers. Since demonstration is essential for actual orders, the company plans to demonstrate in various ways.
