[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The death of a worker at Samsung Heavy Industries caused the employment authorities to investigate whether it violated the Serious Accident Punishment Act.

According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 22nd, a 61-year-old subcontractor of Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, rolled down and died at around 1:20 a.m. on the 18th while using the stairs inside the ship for welding.

Samsung Heavy Industries is subject to medium and large financial solutions with more than 50 full-time workers.

As soon as the accident is confirmed, the Ministry of Employment and Labor sent a labor supervisor to issue an order to suspend work, and is investigating the violation of a serious resolution and the Occupational Safety and Health Act along with the exact cause of the accident.

The Serious Disaster Relief Act, which took effect on Jan. 27, 2022, allows the government to punish employers or managers if they are found to have violated their obligation to establish a safety and health management system in the event of a serious accident such as a worker's death.
