[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung SDI is reportedly exploring the construction of a new battery plant in Europe, specifically in Gdańsk, Poland. Despite the temporary market stagnation (Chasm) affecting the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Samsung SDI appears to be pushing forward with aggressive investment plans.
According to industry sources and Polish economic media outlet Puls Biznesu on the 6th, Samsung SDI is considering investing approximately €2 billion (around 3 trillion KRW) to establish an EV battery plant in the port city of Gdańsk. The company is said to be looking for a 200-hectare (2 million square meters) site near Gdańsk and has reportedly been in negotiations with Polish authorities since late last year. Although an investment decision was expected within this year, it has reportedly been delayed to the first quarter of next year.
In response to reports about the potential investment in the new plant, Samsung SDI stated that while the possibility is being considered from a long-term perspective, no final decision has been made yet.
